An innovative Preston charity has won a prestigious award at the Ethnic Minority Business Awards (EMBF).
GHS Enterprise Ltd, the enterprise arm of the Gujarat Hindu Society (GHS) was presented with the 'Social Enterprise of the Year - 2008' award at a ceremony at the City of Manchester Stadium. The award is presented for outstanding success in setting up an organisation by and for a community, which has a need for such a service.
GHS is a registered charity that made the innovative move of setting up a social enterprise to raise income to support charitable activities. The organisation is set-up within a faith community group that maintains its cultural and social values whilst engaging with the wider community by providing facilities normally offered by hotel and conference centres. GHS is run by a management team who understand the importance of community cohesion and of breaking down cultural barriers.
The group also provides information, advice and training to community, public sector and other organisation on a wide range of issues including health and social and cultural well-being. GHS has recently been highly commended in the business tourism category of the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board awards and was presented with the Marquee of Excellence award for hospitality by the North West Multi-Faith Tourism Association. GHS enterprise was also the finalist for the BIBA Awards (Be inspired Business Awards) 2008.
The EMBF awards ceremony is held to recognise and reward the outstanding achievements made by black and ethnic minority entrepreneurs and businesses in the North West.
Chair of EMBF chair, Dr Nighat Awan OBE, said: "EMBF was set-up in January 2005 to provide strategic leadership and policy advice to the Northwest Development Agency and other key regional decision makers and stakeholders in order to empower the black and minority ethnic to maximise its full potential for the benefit of the region's economy.
"These have brought to the forefront the immense talent, innovation and ingenuity that exists and demonstrates the very positive elements of cultural diversity that the North West is proud of. The black and minority ethnic business population have made a significant contribution to the region's economy and the awards recognised their achievements for the first time on a regional level."
