Quality Accommodation

Bedroom ImageBlackpool, in an effort to drive up the standard of its accommodation offering, is to phase out its local accreditation scheme Quality. The scheme, originally called HOAST, was introduced as a stepping stone in order to better standards across the accommodation sector, will be phased out by the end of March 2009 in a bid for the resort to compete with the rest of the UK's tourism industry.

Instead, hotels, guesthouses and self-catering establishments will be helped and encouraged to join the National Quality Assurance Standards schemes with its star ratings. These are operated by VisitBritain and the AA and are the UK standard, which is internationally recognised.

Mike Wilkinson, Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board chief executive, said: "In this highly competitive marketplace it is imperative operators in Blackpool trade on quality not on price."

The national system uses impartial quality assessment and the number of stars awarded gives an indication of accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and food.
